The Fairphone 2 – the new edition of the ethical smartphone – is now on sale in the UK on contract or PAYG from The Phone Co-op.
The new model of the Fairphone – which aims to spark a movement putting social values at the heart of consumer electronics – is the world’s first modular smartphone on the market.
Each of the major components including the camera, speakers and battery can be disassembled and replaced – while a cracked screen can be fixed in under a minute. Due to its flexible nature and innovative design from UK-based consultancy Seymourpowell, the Fairphone 2 is truly built to last and has been awarded a reparability score of 10/10 by global online repair community iFixit – the highest ever given to a smartphone.
More than 60,000 people around the world purchased the revolutionary first version of the handset, allowing Amsterdam-based social enterprise Fairphone to continue putting concerns for people and planet at the heart of its production process. It sources materials from conflict-free mines, including Fairtrade-certified gold and tantalum from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Fairphone has also helped improve working conditions for factory staff in China by establishing a welfare fund and is reducing e-waste with the collection of scrap phones in Ghana.
The 5-inch, full HD Gorilla Glass LCD display uses Google’s Android operating system for a versatile user experience. The phone is also highly durable, with an integrated protective case that has been shown in tests to stop the screen from shattering even when dropped from heights of 6ft. The protective cover is available in five different colours, including translucent and transparent versions that allow you to see the inner workings of the handset.
The 4G-enabled Fairphone 2 includes a dual SIM function, allowing owners to switch easily between accounts. This means users can keep their work and personal life separate, or swap between home and abroad. The new model also holds 64GB of expanded memory via a micro-SD slot, with an 8-megapixel camera to capture high quality photos and full HD video.
Fairphone is continuing to partner with The Phone Co-op, the UK’s only customer-owned mobile service provider, which is democratically controlled and growing the co-operative business model by helping other co-operatives to start and expand. It is the only mobile provider that is run for the good of its members and customers, not shareholders. The Fairphone 2 is available through The Phone Co-op on a monthly contract (from £25 per month), or with Pay As You Go and Pay As You Use.
The partnership between Fairphone and The Phone Co-op is based around shared values of openness and ‘people power’ and allows UK customers to get the Fairphone 2 on a monthly contract with just £30 upfront. The Phone Co-op is a Living Wage Employer and a founding pioneer of the Fair Tax Mark.
Vivian Woodell, Chief Executive of The Phone Co-op, said:
“Getting your Fairphone on contract with The Phone Co-op is the perfect combination for customers who care about the impact their choices have on the environment and social wellbeing.”

Fairphone is a social enterprise that is building a movement for fairer electronics. By making a phone, we’re opening up the supply chain and creating new relationships between people and their products. We’re making a positive impact across the value chain in mining, design, manufacturing and life cycle, while expanding the market for products that put ethical values first. Together with our community, we’re changing the way products are made.
Fairphone started in 2010 as a campaign to increase awareness for the use of conflict minerals in consumer electronics. In 2013, Fairphone formally transitioned from a campaign to a formal company. Over the past two years, Fairphone has produced and sold 60,000 first edition Fairphones using a pre-order model to maintain its financial independence. At the same time, the company has built an active community to expand the movement for fairer electronics. These achievements have recently earned Fairphone multiple awards, including “fastest growing tech startup in Europe” from The Next Web and ProSiebenSat.1 Accelerator Startup prize from GreenTec. In June 2015, Fairphone was officially certified as a B Corporation, making it the first mobile phone manufacturer to earn this certification.
