Newsnight is more known for reporting the news than making it but, thanks to Paxman’s notorious interview techniques, it has a habit of making headlines of its own. Tuesday’s edition was looking like another run-of-the-mill round up of the day’s news until Chloe Smith, economic secretary to the treasury and the government’s youngest minister, stepped up to the table (from 6 mins 10 secs).

The Paxman experience

I’ve just finished the last of Journalista’s media training feedback for 2010: a full report with positives and negatives on how the candidate approached and responded to each question; analysis of overall performance in each interview and most importantly a list of things to work on and improve in preparation for the next session.

But as the editors are basking in Katieesque media coverage of the Today programme, they might not be knocking on the doors of too many PR companies just yet.

Still there’s nothing like an exchange of fierce rhetoric with John Humphrys to baptise you into the world of interviews.
